The main reason that automobile experts point out with reference to the superiority of synthetic oil over the conventional oil is that the greater viscosity of the latter leads to the formation of unwanted molasses like substances in the engine of the automobile, which eventually decreases the efficiency of engine, with each passing mile.
Therefore, instead of lubricating the pistons to decrease the effect of friction, the conventional oil layers the engine with a coating of performance depleting residue.
On the other hand, the synthetic versions of the oil are chemically enhanced to provide a better flowing and lubricating property, over a very large spectrum of temperature. This property of synthetic oils coupled with automobile engines having tight clearance and/or improved racing grade machinery, providing increased fuel consumption efficiency and drastically reduced friction.
Over time, the synthetic oil has proved to be immensely better option over its conventional counterpart. However, being expensive, it still has not completely replaced conventional oils. In fact, in the world of professional automobile racing, only few of the elite teams get to compete with motor oil having single rated density.
Racers who use such upgraded versions of synthetic oil change frequency, are not only rewarded with improved operation and boosted horsepower but also quick and efficient lubrication of all the concerned engine parts. The laboratory synthesis of synthetic oil is mainly based on the chemical concept of synthesized molecular change of hydrocarbon. Along with this, other complex organic and inorganic compounds are also used. These may be base fluids, which includes alkylated aromatics, polyalphaolefin or synthetic esters.
Both types of oils have their distinct positive and negative features depending on several factors, like being used in the automobile industry, criteria of judgement, model of the engine used, composition of the Piston alloy etc. In fact, in many cases, synthetic oils are mixed with conventional oils and used together as a mixture of defined ratio, in the engines. This, however, is not at all harmful for the automobile if done, considering the recommendations of the manual of concerned automobile. In professional racing both types of oils along with their defined mixture are vigorously tested over and over again to determine their superiority on the basis of following factors -:
1- the amount of gain in horsepower of engine
2- the level of tolerance of the concerned oil against the temperature.
3- The optimum viscosity needed versus the viscosity provided by the oil being used.
Although synthetically manufactured oil command considerable superiority over conventional ones, the choice of oil being put in an engine mainly depends on the vehicle and the purpose for which the vehicle is being used that is, whether the concerned vehicle is for family use or for racing purposes. The family grade vehicles tend to have a higher tolerance against the Residue of conventional oils as compared to racing ones. However, the molecular uniformity and the overall quality of the synthetic versions of oil are indeed superior and allows you to experience very good synthetic oil change frequency, if compared to the crudely made conventional oils. This not only gives the synthetic oil and edge over its conventional counterpart but also establishes it as the future of racing and automobile industry.
